Honesty and Kindness

Is kindness the same as honesty. Is telling the truth necessarily nice? Nope. They are not the same. People confuse both words into one word making it seem offensive to others. When someone wants to
be nice to someone else the other person thinks that they are making them feel bad. But other people see it as a nice compliment because it shows that the other person cares about an accident for example. If there is something wrong with your hair the person will tell you to fix it and other person will appreciate you for being honest. Honesty and kindness can be a good and bad thing but we need to make sure we use the right action with people.

Kara Gebhart idea about honesty and kindness partially related is only reasonable only if you use the correct to express yourself towards people. It can be offensive to some people but helpful to others. Both words have a positive tone but can contradict each other. Honesty and kindness aren't the same thing but neither are they the same.

According to Kara Gebhart, in her essay “A Lesson I Hold Dear,” honesty and kind can both be related but can also oppose from each other. Honesty means to tell the truth with positive, and kid intentions. Gebhart had to live a tragic experience when her friend committed suicide. The author felt bad because she confused honesty and kindness with him. She never loved her friend and she hated herself for telling him that she never loved him. From this lesson she learned that you can still be honest and be kind in a positive way.
I agree with Kara Gebhart. When I was a younger student I was afraid to speak up because I didn't want to hurt anybody’s feelings. I had a similar situation like Gebhart in elementary school. A rebellious girl decided to paint a chair orange and yellow, but when my friend sat down on the wet paint I knew she was in trouble. I finally had the courage to tell my friend she was stained by the wet paint. But instead of seeing me of kind my friend blamed me and suspected I had painted the chair. I was trying to be nice but instead I was the villain. I learned if you have the perfect words for bad news, you can be honest and kind.

In conclusion, we will often have a situation where we will have to confront. We need to know exactly when to be honest and kind. Even though they both may seem positive words they can impact the people differently. Honesty is having a positive way to tell the truth without hurting people and kindness is being nice with what you say. Remember when and how to use the words with people. You can still be honest and kind.

They both may seem different from each other. In this show both honesty and kindness get along with each other and accomplish a lot by working together.

Every Minute Counts In Life

Have you ever felt like giving up in life just because something goes wrong? Well never give up. We  need to realize what we have in our path and appreciate every moment of it. There is people out there in the world who wants to have the little things we have in the United States. Compare to the people we live in the U.S we don't appreciate what we have. While there is people who wants to have the little things to be happy. Appreciate every moment of life.
According to Kimberly Trevisani, in her essay “Pieces of Me,” always be thankful for what you have in your life. The author never appreciated what she had in her life. With the situation her friend went through she realize that she had to take advantages of what she has. Her friend was diagnosed with cancer and died. The friend was never able to be a mom and raise her kids because she died and that feeling touched the author’s heart. The author believed in different things about what she had to do in life and how to be a great mom. But with the accident her friend had, it made her change the point of view of life. She used to think different about the chores she had to do with her children, but now she knows that it’s what makes up life and she has to enjoy her children because you never know when your last day would come.
Kimberly Trevisani essay reflects my reality. Always appreciate what you have in life. A couple of months ago, my brother Victor, had an accident. My brother and I never got along with each other and I never thought that one day a tragedy would occur. Victor got hit by a car and was sent to the hospital for emergency. When I went to see him in the hospital and saw him with pain, I realized that I could of lost him. I never appreciated my little brother and that accident made me realize what I could of lost. It touched my heart. For a moment I thought to myself, “What if I had lost him or I never really told my brother I love him.” All this thoughts made me cry. I realize that I had to appreciate what I have in my life because you never know when it can be gone.
Consider learning from others who don't appreciate what they have in life. Life is full of obstacles that you will have to overcome. It can either be good or bad, but always be thankful for what life puts in your path.

Happiness Is The Key For A Better Future

Have you ever thought that you don't deserve to be happy in life? Or that you live in a world feeling like there is no one to show you how important you are. Well don't.  There could be some people who failed in life and decided to give up. Well Dr. Seuss stated, “Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.” Everything in life happens for a reason and if a door closed on you, a new door will open for a better future. If you believed that your happiness walked away from you  in the past, well let it go because there is a better happiness waiting for you. Everyone deserves happiness.

According to Alexxandra Shuman, in her essay “The Essential to Happiness,” everyone needs to realize that happiness is the key to be successful in life. When she was a young child her life was full of music, joy, family and friends. As she started to grow up, she headed a different path that changed her view of what happiness was. Due to this change she was diagnosed with depression. This made her realize that she had to change her view of life and find the path where it makes her happy. She knows it will take time to find it, but with support of family, friends, love in her life she will find a better future for herself. Everyone has to go through a change in their life and figure out how they will be happy in life. Shuman knew that in order to be happy and enjoy life she had to find love and hope.
I, too, believe that everyone needs happiness in their life. I have a similar situation like
Shuman. As a child you learn that life is full of joy and love but when you go through a higher stage of life, things starts to change. For many people the hardest stage would be high school because it’s the years that are very important for our later lives. Some students will go through depression because they want perfect grades and they forget about being happy and enjoying life. We can’t forget about happiness because it’s what’s bringing you motivation to keep going. To be happy in life you will need your family and friends to support you. If happiness
doesn't come to you right away, you will have to wait because sooner or later it will come for the best.
Next time you or I face a complicated situation, there is no need to worry. The answer is happiness because it brings joy to your life. Everyone needs to be happy in life.

How People View Themselves

The videos we saw in class were very inspiring. One of the videos clip we saw was called, "Doll Face," and it really opened my eyes when the robot tried to be someone else. She tried to look similar or way better then the lady on the television. In my opinion the media is influencing young teenagers into being someone they’re not and showing themselves to reality as some other teenagers. For example, if a teenager thinks she is not pretty enough she would use makeup to make herself look pretty. They will look up to any celebrity in the media to look like one. Guys look up to the media by dressing similar to the images in the media. These topics should be explained in both middle school and high school because someone should tell them how it changes teenagers just by the media. It doesn't just affect young women but also guys. It will be difficult to explain it to teenage girls because we look up to famous celebrities. But also because they wouldn't understand when they can't get to a level of being more pretty they will also break down like the robot and it will be a big disappointment.
The video we saw on "Beauty Sketches,"  was about how women see themselves. The video was about how this artistic man drew women by how the women described themselves. The same man will also ask someone else to look at her and describe her to compare both drawings. The drawing the other person described her came out more beautiful than how she described herself.Every woman who viewed themselves as unpretty, other people contradicted them as beautiful woman.  It will be the same with men because if men don’t think they’re good enough they will change their physical appearance. For example, if a woman tells him that he isn't attractive, the man will do anything to get to the women's expectation. They will go get their hair cut, buy new clothes, shoes, perfumes, etc. The video applies to both men and women. Every person sees themselves a different way from what other people see them as. It's not good that you tell yourself that you're not good enough. It shows how you have no confidence in yourself and it's why you try to be someone you're not. The video is a good video to show other people who do not believe in themselves and feel that they’re not pretty enough to satisfy other people. This is why both men and women try and change so they can see them as pretty women and men. But in reality different people see you as a way prettier person than you see yourself as.
The media has affected me by looking up to famous celebrities. In the media every week there are new kinds of makeup that show up to make yourself look more beautiful. Back in the days i only used to wear mascara and foundation but now I wear foundations, powder, blush, etc., just to make myself look prettier like the actresses in the television. I try to change myself so other people could see me more pretty than before and look different from every year. It's not only make-up the media talks about, but also hair styles, clothes, shoes, and even personality. If you're a person who watches telenovelas like I do, you start acting like the pretty teenagers just to get to their level. Now when I have no make-up I feel like I need to put some on because I look different. The media influences everyone not just me. I've been knowing the media affects everyone on everything like face, personality, body, etc. People change their body so people can see them as beautiful. Everyone is beautiful in their own way, you just have to be confident with who you are and smile. There is this poem that says,” Beauty isn’t about having a pretty face. It’s about having a pretty mind, pretty heart, and a pretty soul.”

Harrassment That Have To Be Changed

The video, “Walking Home,” was reasonable because there are the type of men who are catcalling the women every time they walk by a street. The purpose of the video was to let both men and women know how bad it looks when a guy is catcalls a woman. It’s really annoying to know that some men like to
bother women walking around just to get their attention. For example, if a young teenager girl is walking home, men in their car might yell out how sexy and offer her a ride. The teenage girl will feel scared. This shows how woman live in a world where women can’t live comfortable.
We should be helping each other out and not offending women. It’s a shame when someone from your own race is doing harassment to you because it gives a bad name not just to you but the whole race.
I find it very inappropriate when they get ignored and then the male will call the women a bad word like “stupid,” or “bitch.” The woman in the video, “Walking Home” seemed like she didn't want to even walk around the neighborhood because she knew what was coming for her. She didn't like the idea of them men calling her other names that wasn't her name and just seemed bothered all the time.
The audience for the video is both men and women because it’s clarifying how women don’t like when men bother them around the streets and how wrong it looks. Neither do men and women should do that to each other because it’s a sign of disrespect on each other. It’s influencing everyone not to do it because it’s not a smart choice on doing and it can happen to either a men and a women. It’s something that happens around the world and no one wants it to happen. Neither would a man or woman would like to be harassed because it’s offensive. So if you don’t want them to do it to you, don’t do it on other people and just treat each other with respect.
The other video we saw in class was, “Shit Men Say.” I really like how this video is influencing other men to not harrased other young women. We should make men imagine themselves in a woman's place and how humiliating it really is when they’re getting harassed. The man who doesn't like it when other man give nicknames to young females are telling the whole reason why it’s just not the good way to talk to someone. The men are giving advice to other men on not to talk to a women in a bad way but instead in a good way. For instance, when men want to get a womans’ attention, you must stop and think before taking action. You don’t want to invade her space and feel unsafe and make her feel like you’re harassing her. Harassing a woman is not a good choice to do. This guy says in spanish, “Puede ser tu hermana,” is a phrase that really got my attention because it’s true. If you don’t want other men to give your sister nicknames, don’t be doing the same thing do to other women. The things you do sooner or later comes back to you. The video that seems more reasonable to me is “Shit Men Say,” because it’s men giving advice to other men not to harass other people because it looks bad and it’s just not the right thing to be doing. In my opinion I would prefer this video because it’s entertaining and gives us the overall message of the whole video. I think the audience who would find this to be more presentable would be young teenagers because everyone goes through some kind of harassment in their life. Men don’t really confront what they’re doing because they don’t want to face any problems and just prefer to avoid them. Knowing that their are guys in the world who hate when other men nickname you and is against it, is a good thing to know.

I think both videos are very similar. The first video we saw was, “Walking Home,” and it’s about a woman getting harassed by men and how she really hates getting nicknamed or even when they looked at her. The second video which was, “Shit Men Say,” was about men talking on how wrong it is and offending it’s for the women to have to live around some men who catcall them everyday. Both of the movies have a compare and contrast because in one movies it’s showing you the action and in the other movie they trying to avoid it. They both have the same main idea of showing how bad harassment is. It’s disrespectful to a woman to know that wherever they go they will get harassed. Overall, harassment should stop and men should avoid it before they turn to some awful jerks to the whole world.

Changing The Way You Look

According to Ee’da in “Fade to White”, you have to love yourself even if its hard to uncover your inner-beauty.  The overall theme is not to let people bring you down because you can’t change who you are, or what you’re skin color is, so just be yourself. What I thought it was remarkable about the video was that her mom was afraid that people would treat her different because of her skin tone. So the mom would make her daughter use creams and bleach her skin to make her look more white. The lady was afraid to tell her mom that the makeup bothered her because she wanted to get to her mom’s expectations so she would stay quiet. Her mom grew up in a time period where if you were white, you would have more pride, have privileges, and people would look up at you. She didn't blame her mother because all the mom wanted was a better future for her child.
Starting the video as a white person and by taking off her makeup shows the importance of the topic that she is trying to reach. This video tells the audience that they should be themselves and not care about what other people say. In the video, Eeda so proud that she takes off her make-up  because it doesn't matter what you look like. The video was tells the reader that it doesn't matter how you look by the color of the skin. Just love yourself! Not only is she showing it physically she is also painting a clear picture in your head of what she had to go through as a child.
The “Fade To White” video relates to the clips we watched during class by sharing point it’s of view on personality, appearance, pride of ethnic people. It seeks to make the viewer awake if their everyday life. For example “Beauty Sketches.” They were drawn for how they looked at themselves and later the artist asked different people to describe the person in front of them (first people). The people who described themselves saw how they looked down upon themselves. All these videos tried to send a message to stop trying to change who you are, and to stop global problems that people don't take a clear look at.

This link will send you to her homepage to find out more information about Eeda. http://www.eedamusic.com/go/spoken-word-clip-fade-to-white/

American Indian Life

Indians had many hardships throughout their lives starting in their childhood. Henry Pratt created the boarding schools where children would go to.The government forced Indians to go to boarding school to forget their heritage. One of the phrases he said was, "kill the Indian, save the man." When I heard this phrase, the first thing that came to my mind was how there were people who tried to get rid of the Indian culture. American people wanted Indians to forget where they came from and make them more “American”. Sadly, Walter, an American Indian, and a couple of classmates were Indian boys who were forced to be in the boarding school. For the Indians, boarding school was a tragic experience for them because they had to suffer physical and mental abuse. While they were at the boarding school they suffered from loneliness, and got beat-up from other people. An example from the movie, Thick Dark Fog, was when an Indian lady mentioned how they got strapped down, called savages, called uncivilized, had books slammed on top of their fingers. When Indians grow up they don't remember their parents because when they were at boarding school the bad people made sure they forgot where they came from.   The boarding school experience affected Indian's psychology because they suffered from childhood memories and had flashbacks that brought pain to their lives.

The Indians who were at the boarding school faced a lot of trauma. One of the traumas Walter faced was known as the "thick dark fog." Thick dark fog represents was fog blocking the Indian’s way and keeping them from a better life. When Walter and his classmates were at the boarding school, the mean teachers made them feel ashamed of themselves. The Indians had memories about the past that made them suffer from the situation they lived through. Every Indian who was at the boarding school was controlled and trained to be someone else, not themselves. The biggest trauma for Indians was not being able to find  their road/path to their future because their past was always blocking them. The difference between personal and community trauma is when you have to live through suffering and loneliness alone known as personal trauma. You go through the process alone and feel that nobody else is going through the same experience like you are. But in a community trauma, you have friends you can rely on and get help on so you won't feel alone. For example, in the novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Arnold Junior  is living a hard life because he is poor, has no friends, and has a bad health condition. Oscar the dog is Junior’s dog that he can trust but one day the dog dies and has no one else to be with. However, he finds a friend named Rowdy and they become great friends who are more like brothers. "But Rowdy is my best human friend and he cares about me"(Alexie 16). The author was not alone and is better to live in a community where you know there are people to count on.

When Walter grew up to become an adult, he left the boarding school to move on with his life. He didn't easily forget about his past but a way he healed himself was how he and his wife wrote down all the bad memories from his childhood. Walter and his wife took four years to recover and feel relieved. This was a good way to forget the past because when you write down your life you let your feelings and expressions out and don't hold it in. Another way he healed himself was that he forced himself to go out to the world and talk about his life experiences. This is a good way to overcome your fears and letting people know how hard Indians used to live. What really opened my eyes was when Walter read a book about the Holocaust. He wanted to connect people who had suffered greatly. The people who survived the Holocaust  lived an awful trauma like Walter did and they overcame all their obstacles. After he read a book about the survivors of the Holocaust, he felt inspired by them. Walter could hear, see, and feel the creator. He knew he was “Lakota” and at the end he became a successful Indian.
